First organized in 1983 by a small group of “Santa Cops,” the Christmas Crusade for Children is a program designed to enable city and state police and sheriff’s department personnel to bring the joy of Christmas morning to underprivileged children. Today, law enforcement agencies continue the work of familiarizing themselves with individual family situations, and specifically with the needs and holiday “wish lists” of the children. Through 2012, the Christmas Crusade has touched over 218,500 kids, thanks to the combined outreach by thousands of officers, KYGO listeners, major businesses and concerned individual Coloradoans.

Law enforcement officers nominate children in need. Each officer warrants that they have personal knowledge of each child, and agrees to pick up donated gifts at Crusade Headquarters, to be personally delivered to each child by Christmas Day. The children’s names are entered into the Christmas Crusade computer system, wherein each child is given an identification number. This allows each child to be confidentially tracked throughout the process. KYGO on-air personalities talk about individual children, using first names, gender and ages only, soliciting pledges of new, unwrapped toys.

Listeners respond by calling the Christmas Crusade hotline. Sponsors follow up by bringing their gifts to the Crusade Headquarters (7075 W. Hampden Rd & Reed St.) where they are bagged, tagged and passed along to the child’s nominating officer for delivery. Gifts for unsponsored children are purchased through cash donations to the Christmas Crusade, a non-profit organization as described in section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Our purpose is to brighten the spirits of children who would not otherwise receive a gift on Christmas morning, and to present police officers as positive figures in their lives. It is community policing at its best, delivering a message of heartfelt caring and concern for children. The Christmas Crusade for Children is a 501(c ) (3) non-profit organization, Federal ID # 84-1127073.

You may bring the gifts anytime before the deadline on December 15th, but the sooner the better.

Does the Crusade Accept Corporate Donations?

Should I wrap the gifts I donate?
Please do not wrap the gifts. We check each of the thousands of gifts we deliver to ensure that each gift is age- and gender-appropriate. Before officers deliver the gifts, we wrap them in Christmas Crusade bags and tag them with special labels.

What types of items should I donate?
If you do not choose a specific child with specific gift request or needs, you may donate any number of items that will still be given to a child in need. Frequently requested items include learning games and toys (especially for young children), clothing shoes, winter coats, winter boots, books, CDs, bicycles, dolls, sports equipment, art supplies and toiletries.

Do you accept donation of lightly used toys, clothes, etc.?
We only accept new items. We recommend donating lightly used items to Goodwill Industries or ARC thrift stores.

Do you accept donations of food?
Generally we do not accept food donations. However, there are many organizations that do, including the Volunteers of America at 303-297-0407 and the Jeffco Action Center at 303-237-7704.

How are the children receiving gifts identified?
Christmas Crusade relies on law enforcement officers having personal knowledge of children from their time working on the streets and in the schools. When an officer personally knows a child in need, he or she nominates that child to be a Christmas Crusade recipient. The officer will later personally deliver the gifts to the child on or before Christmas Day.

Can I nominate my own family or another family to receive gifts?
Christmas Crusade does not accept self-nominations or nominations from the community directly. Only law enforcement officers participating in the Christmas Crusade may nominate kids to receive gifts.

What are the hours of operation for Christmas Crusade Headquarters?
Headquarters is open from November 25th through December 20th. Crusade headquarters will be staffed from 7:30am to 7:00pm on weekdays and 9:00am to 6:00pm on Weekends.  Local police and sheriff’s departments will take turns staffing the office.

Does the program also help children who do not celebrate Christmas?
Despite its name, Christmas Crusade is meant to benefit any and all children in need during the winter holidays. So whether a child celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or any other holiday, the men and women of Colorado law enforcement are happy to help make winter a little warmer for them
